The Town of Barnstable, together with regional partners, is in support of an Applied Coastal Resilience Innovation Center to catalyze economic and educational opportunities that will lead to innovative solutions to improve the resilience of housing, infrastructure and the environment in coastal communities.

This public/private initiative would create and retain economic opportunity and jobs on Cape Cod and develop innovative solutions to support and enhance coastal communities, while mitigating and adapting to climate change.  The center will focus on applied research, creative technology and application development, product testing, and business acceleration, alongside workforce development programs and educational institution interactions around the theme of coastal resilience.

The innovation center seeks to be a national leader in developing coastal resilient housing, specifically specialized construction materials and methods, engineering, design, smart home systems and smart wastewater treatment solutions.  The center would be anchored by innovation and incubator space focused on the research and development of flood resistant materials and designs capable of withstanding prolonged contact with floodwaters without sustaining significant damage.  It provides the potential to work with FEMA and ASTM to redefine flood resistance, using applied technology and innovation to take it to the next level.

Currently there are no university partners focused on the applied aspects of coastal resilience that incorporates innovation into coastal construction and bringing products and technologies to the market place.  This effort would retain innovations that are currently being developed and licensed by Massachusetts universities.  In addition to the training and creation of jobs in the housing/construction segment, the center will also provide the skills for individuals to fill jobs in related technical areas, including the engineering, blue economy and technology sectors.

The Town of Barnstable, along with its partners, perceives real market demand to establish an Applied Coastal Resilience Innovation Center in the unique coastal location of Cape Cod.
